Description
There were so many art movements from the 18th and 19th centuries that it can be challenging to track them all. This jigsaw contextualization activity designed for the AP Art History course engages students in art historical thinking skills.
Before you start teaching students about 18th and 19th-century artworks, why not take a moment to pause and do a lesson that will help build a foundational basis for the many art movements they will learn about? This jigsaw activity is designed to give students an overview of the following art movements: Rococo Art, Neoclassical, Romanticism, Neo-Gothic, Realism, Impressionism, Expressionism, and Post-Impressionism.
In this lesson, students will be split into groups to research one art movement. Together, they will design a poster that covers the historical contextualization, characteristics of identifying artwork from that movement, three pieces of art that exemplify the art movement, and a works cited page. Afterward, students will present their posters to the class while the audience takes notes on their findings. This is an excellent way to introduce students to the many art movements they will encounter within this unit.
