Description
Students will learn about when members of the Israeli team were taken hostage by Palestinian members of Black September and ultimately killed during the 1972 Olympics. They will visit a selection of websites and answer 17 questions. The answers are included where appropriate.
Sample questions include:
--What were the demands of Black September and how did Israel respond?
--Explain what transpired 12 hours into the hostages being taken. You must write at least 3 different items.
--How did German police and figures from Egypt, Tunisia, and Libya try dealing with the Palestinians? Were these efforts successful? Why or why not?
--Describe the two images that most convey the course and nature of the tragedy.
--Do you think this tragedy would have happened no matter where the Olympics were being held that year? Why or why not?
--What sorts of changes do you think were made to future Olympics (or other large international events) as a result of this tragedy?
