Description

Can your students collect all of the ingredients to bake fruitcakes in time for Christmas?

This escape activity is no prep and runs through Google Apps. Students can work independently or collaboratively to solve 10 locks by clicking on each ingredient card and completing the task. They can enter the lock combination for each card on the embedded Google form. It is a self paced activity that is great for students to do in class or during remote learning.

Throughout the activity they will review:

  • Literary Terms
  • Tier 2 Vocabulary
  • Figurative Language
  • Sensory Language
  • Chronological Order
  • Inferencing
  • The Biography of Truman Capote
  • A Short Info Passage on Prohibition (Mr. Haha's Card)

There is a public domain copy of the story embedded in the site for students to access and refer. This activity will work best as a review after they have read the story.

***Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need physical locks? No. This all digital so there is no prep.

How long will this take? Plan for about 45 minutes on average and adjust for grade level and ability.

What browser do I need? Your students will need access to Google and a Google account.

How do students access the activities? They will click on the cards and then make their own copy of each slide. They will get their combination for each lock from the slide and enter it into the form next to the cards.

What devices do I need? It will work with desktops, laptops, tablets and most phones.

Can I embed this in Google Classroom? No. However, you can link out from it. It will not show results in Google Classroom.

How can I grade the activity? You will not be able to see responses on the form. If your students are working remotely and you want to give a completion grade, an idea would be to have them send you a screenshot of the ‘Congratulations Message’ at the end. I have also included an optional printable answer sheet as well.

All required components are through Google except for the follow up puzzle game. The puzzle is through Jigsaw Planet. It is intended to provide students with a fun activity if they finish the breakout with extra time left. It is not a requirement for the breakout.
