Description

Everything you need to deliver the requirements of addition in one resource. A great start to the new semester when reviewing, extending and embedding the skills of addition.

I have used this resource within my classroom to introduce, develop and embed the skills of addition from simple units added to units, through to more complex addition of decimals, including carrying in all columns.

What I have most enjoyed about this resource is the time it saves in planning and developing. Once the children have completed the questions, it is easy to edit the numbers and allow the children to complete again, or simply print off for instant homework.

This resource is one of four (the other three being subtraction, multiplication and division). At the start of each year, the children complete each module as part of the curriculum. The structure of this PowerPoint already ensures differentiation at the heart of the model. As the children start their developing knowledge in addition, the try their skills on the first slide, using the first, left hand column (units with no remainders, quickly followed by hundreds with units, then thousands with units). This allows the children to embed the skills and gain in confidence working with larger numbers, but still experiencing success.

Once they have achieved this column, they can quickly move to the second column, which uses similar numbers (units added to tens, then hundreds, then thousands), only this time, they will need to carry past 10.

Following this, the children can then apply their skills to decimals in the same way.

As the children become more confident, the next slide introduces the addition of tens and units to tens and units, hundreds, then thousands with no carrying. The same structure applies, with the children growing in confidence as they use larger numbers. The second column introduces carrying, with the third column working in decimals.

As the activity continues, the children work with adding hundreds, then adding thousands.

It is a simple process, but incredibly effective in pitching the lesson at the right level, and ensuring that children embed learning and move on quickly.

All questions have their own answer sheets, so can be easily printed off by the class teacher for assessment, or self assessment by the pupils (of course, they can self check using calculators if this is another objective to be covered).

I have seen progress rapidly increase by developing maths sessions in this way, and planning is made much easier, as well as targeting learning to effectively at different learners.

Please view the preview and first few pages of the product for the visuals. Once downloaded, it is ready to go, and can last as long as you need to teach addition. Simply change the numbers and the slides can be used again, or printed for homework.
