Art Lesson - Zentangle- Successful Zentangle Drawing Projects - No Prep

For over 15 years, the first lesson that I always teach is Zentangle. Its a self esteem building lesson, its the lesson that convinces students that they CAN DRAW! Its the lesson that teaches students that lines can communicate a feeling or subject without being pictures. For many of my students, its the first drawing that they've ever done that they loved. Its the lesson that students always tell me was their favorite!

After years of teaching this lesson, I've nailed down the steps that allow all students to actually be successful with this kind of drawing. I teach this in small, bite size chucks that allow students to explore and grow their budding drawing skills. I start with "What is a line?" Then, "How can I make a line communicate?" Next, "How do lines make patterns?" Once the element of line is explored, then we make patterns, then design a composition, then finally draw the masterpieces!
