The Magic Squares number trick will become one of your favorite activities. People of all ages enjoy doing the trick. Magic Squares is a mental math addition number trick. However, unless you know the secret to the trick, it is very difficult for anyone to figure it out.
Magic Squares can be done anytime during the year, but it is a perfect activity for the first day of school or during the first week of school. It only takes a few minutes, and it will get your students excited about your class and the new school year. Your students will ask to do the trick whenever there is extra time. They will be amazed by your magical powers!
How to perform the Magic Squares trick:
Pretend you can read your students’ minds. Do not tell them the trick right away. It is a great activity to keep them wondering for several days or weeks.
Have a student select a number on the first page (numbers 1-31 in consecutive order). Tell the student that you will be performing magic, and you will read their mind to determine the number they selected from the first page. Once the student has selected a number, go through each of the remaining 5 pages. Tell the student to look for their number on each page. If their number is on a page, they say “yes”. If their number is not on a page, they say “no”. As the student answers, yes or no, stare at the student pretending that you are reading their mind. The performer will know the student’s number after the 5th page. The key to the trick is ….
