Description

Welcome! This listing offers a full-page exercise that gives students practice demonstrating their understanding of how a bacteria’s scientific name relates to its colonial arrangement and individual shape. I assign this activity in my high school biology class. This worksheet is also ideal for students taking a microbiology unit in Human Anatomy and Physiology.

In Part I, students will write the colony arrangement name and the individual shape on the line under the pictured bacteria. For example, students will write "streptobacillus" under the image showing a chain of rod-shaped bacteria.

In Part II, students will sketch the colony arrangement of the bacteria with the correct individual shape under the scientific name. For example, students will draw clusters of spherical-shaped bacteria in the drawing canvas under the term staphylococcus.

In Part III, ten bacteria are listed by scientific name (genus and species). Students will record what the name reveals about the bacteria’s individual shape and colony (if applicable). For example, students will write "S-shaped bacteria" for Rhodospirillum rubrum.

The first page provides an overview of the three main colony arrangement names, with the common name for each next to the scientific name – diplo (pairs), staphylo (clusters), and strepto (chains). It also provides an overview of the five main individual bacterial shapes in both singular and plural form – coccus (spherical), bacillus (rod-shaped), spirillum (s-shaped), spirochete (corkscrew-shaped), and vibrio (comma-shaped).

This document will become editable upon conversion to Microsoft Word using an Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Program. It includes a two-page key with the answers in red font.
