Description

The Behaviour Passport has developed over the past ten years of supporting pupils with daily behaviour issues.

We have found in our classrooms that regular, small review periods can support children in seeing the day as small chunks - and therefore each chunk is manageable to experience success. As a result, behaviour over time improves, this is discussed, evaluated and celebrated with the child using the Passport every day, with a final Friday phone call home to share successes (as well as next steps and areas for further development).

How it works:

If you have a child struggling with maintaining good learning behaviours, provide them with a Passport and discuss how it will be used. The Passport belongs to the child. Therefore they can add their own name, decorate the passport and must keep it with them throughout the week and take it to every session in school.

After each timetabled session, the class teacher, together with the child will discuss how the learning behaviour in that session has been in terms of their own learning, and their role in supporting the learning of others. The teacher will then award the child one of three faces (a happy face for a great session, a straight smile face for an okay session, or an unhappy face for a tricky session where learning behaviours did not support wither their own learning or that of others) along with a comment justifying why this has been awarded. This must be discussed with the child so that they know why they have received that face and agree with it.

At the end of the day, the child and teacher come together and review the day. Looking at the front cover, each school day has a piece of the weekly circle. Together, reviewing the outcomes of each session, the child must decide whether the section of the circle should be coloured red (some issues which impacted on learning), amber (no real issues, but a few wobbles) and green (a great day!).

As the week goes on, the behaviour profile of the child builds up. Positives must be celebrated, and if followed in this way, the child should have had plenty of teacher time - which often sets the child up to further experience success as they feel even more valued and special.

Friday is a vital day. During the day, the class teacher must spend time with the child in a meaningful session to discuss the week. The back page of the passport has three sections to complete together.

  • What is the child most proud of?
  • What have they enjoyed the most that week?
  • What should their parents/carers be told?

At this point, the teacher should phone home and share the outcomes with parents/carers and celebrate with the good, with the not so good - but ensuring the phone call is a positive one to build upon next week.

As an additional reward, if the children collect an agreed number of smiley faces - or collect no unhappy faces at all, they could receive a reward agreed upon by both the child and the teacher.

The Passport and PowerPoint preview are included in the Zip file download so that staff training can be completed. Such is the success of this simple resource that we use this across the school for a range of pupils. Whilst we label the product for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders, we are also seeing success with our younger learners too.

Parents enjoy seeing the Passport and the phone calls make a massive difference, particularly in building relationships with families and for the child to see everyone working together for the positive outcomes.

If you have any questions, either before purchase or after purchase, please contact us. This resource is fully editable and therefore timetable changes and curriculum details can be changed to suit your school day.
