Description

A fun and engaging introductory lab that gives students a hands-on activity on day one. Students have to answer the deceptively simple question 'Is It Alive?' based on whether or not each specimen checks off all the boxes required to be considered such. Flexible and engaging, you can pick your own specimens or go with the tried-and-true set of suggestions in the lab. Put the syllabus and rules aside.....there will be time for that....let your students decide if that chicken egg is actually alive or what makes that leopard gecko keep going.

This was a great resource to use at the beginning of the school year! It allowed my students to actively explore the characteristics of living things, discuss their observations, and debating whether they met the criteria for life. Students were able to actively engage with the material and each other. It definitely helped break the ice and created a collaborative learning environment where students felt comfortable sharing their thoughts and ideas.

I LOVE this resource! I use it each year without fail. The biggest thing I am thankful for is the ability to use it easily in the classroom as a normal task card activity. If we need to transfer to distance learning, I love that I am able to still use this resource very easily.
