Description

Students watch Boatlift from 9/11 (September 11, 2001) and answer 16 questions. There are 12 other questions for students to answer and 2 tasks to complete (a commemoration and a word cloud). Many of the questions are designed for class discussion or individual student reflection. The answers are included where appropriate.  Two URLs are provided to access Boatlift and the video itself is just under 12 minutes long.

Sample questions include:
--How do you define “hero?” What are 3-5 characteristics you associate with someone who can be categorized as a hero?
--At the start of the video, it says, “A hero is a man who does what he can” from Romain Rolland. Compare and contrast that to your perspective of heroism and that of your classmates.
--Why was the first man (Vincent Ardolino) compelled to help during 9/11? How did he help?
--Why did the Captain believe, “you have to pick them up?”
--Why do you think so many described it was the greatest thing they had done in their lives?
--Explain the importance of trying per Ardolino.
--Do any of the individuals from Boatlift qualify as a hero according to your initial definitions/characteristics, why or why not?
--Does this video give you new information, or a new perspective, of 9/11? Explain your thought process.
