Description

Students will compare and contrast speech excerpts from early Civil Rights activists Washington and DuBois by answering 16 questions and completing a sorting chart. Then they will read excerpts from the majority and dissenting opinions from Plessy v. Ferguson and complete a task. Lastly, they will read 4 quotes/excerpts and determine whether it was said by Washington or DuBois and explain why. The answers are included where appropriate and this would be great for a sub.

Sample questions include:
--Explain what Washington is suggesting to white Southerners regarding the answer to number 3.
--How does Washington characterize the potential relationship between blacks and whites?
--Why does Washington believe segregation won’t continue indefinitely?
--Where does DuBois find an immediate “flaw” in Washington’s sentiments?
--Explain DuBois’ ultimate conclusion in this excerpt in your own words to demonstrate understanding.
