Description
There is no better way to discuss America's westward expansion than with the story of the Corps of Discovery. Charged by Thomas Jefferson to explore the newly-acquired Louisiana Territory, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark led 58 men, a Shoshone woman, and a Newfoundland dog on a journey to the Pacific Ocean and back. The expedition opened the way for America's settlement of the west -- and, unfortunately, marked the beginning of the end for the Native American tribes already occupying that territory.
This resource includes a 56-question video guide to accompany the Ken Burns' documentary on the Corps of Discovery. The video guide is divided into two section, each shown over a two-day period, and focuses on those sections instrumental to the story of Lewis and Clark. An answer key is included.
The resource also includes three biographies on individuals related to the Corps of Discovery: Thomas Jefferson, who authorized the expedition, Lewis and Clark, who captained the expedition, and Sacagawea, who served as both guide and translator.
In completing the biographies, students are encouraged to:
1. Number the paragraphs
2. Read the biography
3. Highlight answers in the reading
4. Use complete sentences
The answer key demonstrates these steps.
For those seeking distance learning options, the biographies can easily be converted to digital activities using Google Slides.
