Description

This bundle includes 4 highly engaging lessons from our Engagers in Science unit "Cells, Cells, Cells!". These four lessons align with the philosophy of the NGSS,  including a focus on deeper understanding of content as well as application of content, student performance expectations, and integration with mathematics. The lessons are classroom tested and ready for immediate implementation.

The 4 lessons on cells provide activities, guided readings and investigations to explore and develop deep understandings to these guiding questions:
  • How do we determine if something is living or nonliving?
  • What is the structural difference between living and nonliving things?
  • What is the structural difference between plant and animal cells?
  • How are cells organized to maintain life processes?
  • Why must there be many tiny cells instead of one large cell?

Students will encounter the Science & Engineering Practices of
planning and carrying out investigations to determine if something is living or nonliving and to determine differences between plant and animal cells.
Students will create visual models of cells in order to better understand the parts that make up a cell and how they work interdependently to maintain cellular processes.

The Cross-cutting concepts found in these lessons include:
Scale, Proportion, and Quantity
Students will investigate cell size and scale.
Students will investigate and determine reasons why cells must be so small.
Structure and Function
Students will identify the special structures within cells and their specific functions for cells to carry out processes.

Included in these lessons (in both Google and pdf versions) are google slides for presentation to the class, a detailed teacher booklet with full instructions and student handouts with the information needed for all the investigations and assessment instructions. The teacher booklet also has rubrics for the assessments that you may choose to use, answer keys for the investigations and student examples.
