Description
This product contains two different prompts for Constructing Explanations or CER and Arguing from Evidence, aligned to NGSS standards MS-PS-3-1 and MS-PS-3-2 on Kinetic and Potential Energy. Both prompts give students a short passage and either a data table or graph to use to help them construct an argument from evidence.
Each prompt has three versions.
The first version is the version I use for the majority of my students. The prompt is usually given towards the middle or end of the unit so students have background knowledge and personal observations from labs and discussions that they can also use as sources of evidence and in their reasoning.
Modification A I use for SPED students.
Modification B I use for ELL and any student who I feel needs additional support when writing.
Two examples of student answers are included for each prompt along with a general CER grading rubric
Contains
- Cover, TOU (2 pages)
- Teacher Notes with suggestions for using the modifications (1 page)
- Prompt 1 "“How does changing velocity affect the total Kinetic Energy of an Object?” for NGSS MS-PS3-1 Construct and interpret graphical displays of data to describe the relationships of kinetic energy to the mass of an object and to the speed of an object. Three versions (regular, SPED and ELL/writing support) and ANSWER KEY (4 pages)
- Prompt 2 "How does changing the height of an object affect the object’s potential energy?" for NGSS MS-PS3-2 Develop a model to describe that when the arrangement of objects interacting at a distance changes, different amounts of potential energy are stored in the system. Three versions (regular, SPED and ELL/writing support) and ANSWER KEY (4 pages)
- General Rubric for grading Constructing Scientific Explanations (1 page)
