Activity #1: The Great Leap Forward
Option 1: 10 Slide PowerPoint
- Part 1: Students are asked what 3 posters show about the goals of the Great Leap Forward
- Part 2: An informational chart and 2 propaganda posters show the policies of the GLF. Students are asked to identify problems with the policies and predict what will happen.
- Part 3: Students analyze 2 graphs on the impacts that the GLF had on China
- Part 4: Students analyze a political cartoon on the Great Leap Forward
Option 2: GLF Resources and Question Sheet
This activity contains the same resources as the PowerPoint. The resources have slightly more information and there are some additional questions on the question sheet.

Activity #2: The Cultural Revolution
Option 1: 10 Slide PowerPoint
- Part 1: Students are asked various questions about 3 Cultural Revolution posters
- Part 2: Students are asked how a primary source and political cartoon relate to one another
- Part 3: Students use a 244-word summary on the Cultural Revolution to determine why the Chinese government later called it a “severe setback”
