Close Reading Strategies NO-Prep Printables

Before I began using the SPADE Close Reading Strategies, my students really struggled with annotating informational text.  They often used different colored highlighters to cover the page with pretty colors. Needless to say, this strategy did not improve their comprehension. 

When used correctly, close reading strategies encourage an interaction with the text that deepens the reader’s comprehension. Using the activities included in this resource, your students will be provided with a structured framework to work within that will prepare them to participate in discussions or respond to questions about the text they’re analyzing.  

Using the SPADE acronym steps as a guide, your students will: 

 √ Survey: get a rough idea of what the text is about using the text features and layout

√ Predict: predict what they will be reading about

√ Annotate and Analyze: use gist statements/hashtags to record the main ideas of each paragraph

√ Dissect: analyze any questions that they’ve been asked about the text

√ Evidence: identify text evidence that will support their responses to questions about the text

The SPADE Analysis Worksheet not only guides them through this process, but also provides you with documentation of a student’s progress and thinking. You can then easily identify areas of concern and strengths for future planning.
