Description
In this lesson, students will learn about the significance of the Code of Hammurabi for World History.
Students will also learn about the specific laws of the Code of Hammurabi and write about what those laws teach them about what society in Ancient Mesopotamia was like.
This lesson includes a powerpoint that sets up the lesson and explains the significance of laws and the Code of Hammurabi.
For the activity, students have a 2 page worksheet that lists various situations that they have to create a law for. The teacher will then go over what the Code of Hammurabi did in those situations with another powerpoint.
During this process, teachers will prompt the students to discuss the differences in their answers with the Code of Hammurabi and what that tells us about Ancient Mesopotamian society.
A full lesson plan is included with notes on what aspects of Mesopotamian culture the class should be able to determine from the laws.
At the end of the lesson, students write a paragraph about a key difference between Ancient Mesopotamia and our own society.
