Description
Discover the impact of the Columbian Exchange! This lesson engages students in exploring the changes in the world due to Columbian Exchange.
Students will be asked, if the world is better because of the Columbian Exchange. The lesson begins with an inquiry question that the class must solve together by asking yes/no questions Next pairs must find their partner in an “I Have . . . Who Has . . .?” activity. When the pairs successfully find their partner, they turn over the cards. On the back of the cards are scrambled clues about the origin of the plant or animal. After unscrambling their clue, pairs locate the origin of their item on a map.
The class then reads a background reading on the Columbian Exchange. Pairs then lead the class in filling in the map of origins. After recording the plants and animals on the map, the instructor adds details about technology and diseases that were also exchanged. The pairs then brainstorm ideas for the pros and cons of the Columbian Exchange.
Finally, the students write an argumentative essay answering the question-Is the world better because of the Columbian Exchange?
