Description
This product introduces students to 54 sets of words which include the root word, followed by the comparative (by adding "er" to the word) and the superlative (made by adding the "est" pattern).
Within the product, the following resources are included:
- Instructions for use (including how the resource can be used beyond posters in the classroom - making it multi-functional for a variety of learning objectives and scenarios)
- Definition poster of "Comparative" and "Superlative" words.
- Spelling Rules when adding "er" and "est" to existing words and how that can change the spelling of the root word.
- 54 word cards, each including the root word, comparative word and superlative word (making 162 words in all).
- All cards have an image which represents the word being made and the comparison to the root word to aid student recognition and understanding that each word has to the root word (see preview and thumbnail images).
This resource is perfect for introducing students to how comparative and superlatives work. Not only that, but as a way of investigating spelling rules, students can view each of the cards and come up with their own hypothesis of how words are spelt differently when adding "er" or "est" depending on how the root word is spelt (e.g. penultimate letter being a vowel, "y" ending", consonant ending etc).
All of these resources support the development of a students' language skills and enrich the vocabulary they use.
What is also useful is the color coded imagery on each sheet, allowing students to see words from the same family (synonyms) as well as antonyms within the word sets.
Our students loved this resource, and the value of the games they then invented using a second set of cards was proof of a great, versatile resource. Finding word families, word classification, spelling rules, fishing, Literacy Centers, as well as sending sets home for home based learning - there are so many ways this resource can be used.
Both color and black and white versions have been included for ease of printing and helping the classroom budget.
Best wishes
