Description
The essay prompts in this editable assignment were developed to build on Shawneen Morrison’s Culture, Diversity, Equality, Prejudice and Tolerance lesson (also available at TpT). However, a vocabulary list from the foundational lesson is included here in case the essay prompts are desired for stand-alone use. Eighteen essay prompts lead students to analyze and articulate the origins, impacts, and modern manifestations of prejudice, discrimination, privilege, inequality, cultural identity, intolerance, racism and sexism. Students can work on a chosen topic independently, as a group, in class, or as homework. Because students generally have very strong opinions about the essay prompts, allowing class time for discussion or debate provides a valuable opportunity to delve deeper into the content and to hone written and verbal skills. Alternatively, the essay prompts can be used as a guide for class discussion rather than as a written assignment. References to Common Core applications when used as essay prompts or as a class discussion guide are included.
