Description

Students will read, analyze, and compare and contrast 5 D-Day accounts by answering 40 questions and analyzing 6 images according to 2 prompts. The accounts are from 2 American soldiers at Normandy, a French civilian, an American soldier who did not participate in D-Day, and the wife of that soldier.

These sources can be used as a complete packet, a gallery walk, stations, or in jigsaw groups. The answers are included where appropriate and this would be great for a sub!

Sample questions include:
--Inferring from the text and what you have learned, what was the purpose of this action?
--Why didn't he have anywhere to take cover?
--In what way(s) did Edlin contribute to the D-Day efforts despite his mobility limiting injuries?
--Do you think she sympathizes with any of the soldiers she mentions? Why or why not?
--If this HAD been Marie’s first wartime experience, explain 3 ways her diary entry would have differed.
--Explain what Bach and his men would have been doing, or the situation they were in, at 10:15.
--Why might Moe have referred to D-Day as a “world shaking event?”
--Give an example of the “great sacrifices” that Sylvia referred to.
--How do you think a Japanese soldier would have reacted to the news about D-Day? What about a Japanese civilian?
