Description
Define normal. Are labels helpful or harmful?
This engaging introduction to abnormal psychology has students creating their own understandings of the continuum of normality and the effects of labels on diagnosing, treating, and living with a mental illness.
First, students will read various scenarios of behaviors and place them on a continuum. During a Stay-And-Stray Gallery Walk, one partner will have to justify their placement choices while the visitors question them.
Then, students will watch a brief video to the famous experiment on "Being Sane in an Insane Place" and read the overview of the study. They will then discuss processing questions to help them answer their culminating writing activity: Are labels helpful or harmful?
