Description
Distance Learning with simple machines and Rube Goldberg Machines! PLEASE READ: This is a PDF file! It was made as a PDF so it could be put into different platforms for digital learning. It is not interactive. It is a lesson that can be sent to students to work on at their own pace! It can be uploaded into Google Classroom as a PDF to use or onto other platforms. It is just meant to guide and direct students as they work on their own pace. (mini lesson with STEM challenge)
Check out STEMsational STEM for more resources.
This lesson was created for my own students! Simple machines was one of their last science standards that needed to be taught for the year! I figured what better way to learn about simple machines than with STEM! This is built to be a mini lesson about simple machines (through a video) and then they are encouraged to create their own Rube Goldberg (after watching a few videos on them of course) with using at least two simple machines in their own Rube Goldberg Machine!!
The lesson starts with a video about the history of Rube Goldberg Machines. (the links are not mine). Then it gives several different video links to Rube Goldberg Machines. There are complex machines and there are simple machines! It will open their eyes and hopefully hook them! After they have watched several videos on Rube Goldberg Machines, they will then watch a video on simple machines!
Then it gives students the challenge, materials, constraints, planning, and testing. Again, students are asked to engineer their own Rube Goldberg Machines using at least two simple machines with supplies they have around their house! They can email their pictures to you the teacher! Or they can send videos explaining what they created, the two simple machines they used, and how it works! They can simply use scrap paper to plan and design! This is meant to teach a standard for students that may not have been taught yet in their own classroom. It is also meant to be a fun and engaging way for students to learn about simple machines!! And...my hope is that it takes some pressure off of parents...in that it is not a worksheet...but a way for kids to use their own thinking and space to create Rube Goldberg machines while also learning about simple machines in their own home!
This also meets Georgia Social Studies Standards of Excellence - S4P3c
This resources includes the following:
*Video links to story of Rube Goldberg
*Links to videos on Rube Goldberg Machines
*Links to video on simple machines
*Challenge
*Constraints
*Materials list
*Planning
*Planning Sheet for printing for student if they would like to.
*Testing Slide
*Teacher Notes
*Additional links for more on Rube Goldberg machines and the yearly competition.
I create these resources to be used in my own classroom! I teach from this very same file! It is a good visual for students and if you were to be observed by administration. It helps to guide you with the lesson and gives the students a visual of what is expected. I work super hard on these lessons because I want my students to be engaged, have fun, and enjoy learning while they are in my classroom! I try to create real-world lessons where students have to engineer and design the solution.
It also gives them something to take home to hopefully explain the "process" of what they learned to adults at home! Please feel free to ask my questions and leave helpful feedback!! Thank you so much!!!
