Distance Learning: STEM Challenge - Here Comes the Garbage Barge - FREE

 This is a ready to use STEM challenge featuring the story Here Comes the Garbage Barge. We use the book as the hook (link to reading of the book included) and then the students are asked to use trash to build a new toy, build something to solve a problem around their house, or even a new tool. Basically, they are using items they have around the house to re-purpose their trash to save it from the landfill. This STEM challenge was created for parents, teachers, or students to use at home while we use distance learning. It is a short STEM challenge for students to do at home! There is a link to the story and then it gives the student the challenge, constraints, and materials needed and then a plan to set-up their solution for the challenge! It is in a PDF form, but it can still be uploaded to Google Drive in PDF form. Or email this file to teachers, add it to a email as a link, put it on your schools website, be creative! They don't have to print...they can use paper at home for their plan and working through the problem! They can email teachers their final product and for testing....they can upload a video explaining what they made out of trash and how it solves a problem around their house or how it was made into something new that can be used! I would love to see videos and pictures too! So...send them to me as well!! I would love to share with other teachers!!!

There are also other suggestions for parents to use with their story. It gives a few science, social studies, and ELA connections! This is just meant to be an easy, hands-on, engaging STEM challenge to help keep student's working, thinking, and creating!
