Description

This series of visualizing and verbalizing activities is designed to help students break the reading language process apart and practice reading for meaning. In this product, you will find an engaging four-page Introduction to Visualizing Text lesson, 13 visualization paragraph/passage practice activities, and two reproducible pages for read alouds and independent reading.

Students learn how to use the visualization strategy to improve their reading comprehension by reading slowly and paying attention to details in the story or text and using those details to create a movie or image in their minds. They then verbalize from their visualized picture; writing in their own words what they "see" in their imagination.

  • You will begin by reading aloud a paragraph then modeling the visualization strategy for your class. Students will offer their own visualizations of this paragraph.
  • You will then move to the Intro to Verbalizing Text packet where you will guide students through the process of reading a paragraph, looking at the example, and brainstorming other images they can add to the picture.
  • Students will draw an additional image they create in their mind from the paragraph in the drawing box.
  • Students will then write, in their own words, what they visualize.
  • Students will then practice the visualizing strategy again with a second paragraph, making an image in their minds, drawing what they "see" and then writing a brief description of what they visualize.

There are 13 additional activity worksheets for independent practice or homework.

Finally, there are two reproducible pages for use with read alouds and independent student reading.

Print in "scale to fit" or 94%.
