Description

Easy Prep independent project about the Nature of Science that can be used as regular lessons or as emergency substitute plans. Three different art project formats are suggested and the final projects are great for classroom and hallway displays.

I have also used this as an enrichment project for gifted students and honors students.

Understanding Science” Activity has two parts
Part 1: Students will use the pages from the “Understanding Science” website created by the University of California Museum of Paleontology, Berkeley, and the Regents of the University of California. There are about 5 pages total to read broken down into three shorter sections.
•The direct links to the pages of the Understanding Science website could be shared in Google Classroom, the digital version of the note sheet can be used., or you can print out the pages as a PDF for students to use.
•As students read over the pages they will fill in the “Understanding Science” organizer..

Part 2: Students are given the task of making a visual representation of “ What is Science?”. Three different art project formats are suggested and the final projects are great for classroom and hallway displays.
I have also used this as an enrichment project for gifted students and honors students.

Engage (optional) to kick off this project I start by asking students to draw sketches of scientists doing science. Then have the students do a gallery walk of the sketches to collect observations about trends and common themes they notice. Often students will find that most of the scientists are males, with crazy hair and exploding things. However , this is a stereotype of what science really is so challenge your students to critically think about what is means to ‘do science” (I have included a direction sheet for this engage activity if you want to do it)
