Description
Equation Maker is a student-centered Google Slide activity that challenges your students to create "Open Middle" equations with variables on both sides that have one solution, no solution, and infinitely many solutions.
This slide deck presents your students with 5 increasingly challenging equations with empty boxes they must fill in with numbers from a given Number Bank that must meet certain criteria, such as to create an equation with no solution. Using the "Open Middle" style of questioning, students must create their equations and then explain their thinking about how they solved the problem, and how that know their solution is correct.
This slide deck is perfect to use after having taught your 8th grade math students how to solve an equation with variables on both sides. You can use this activity as an independent challenge activity, a pairs activity to get students talking math strategy, or even as a whole class discussion.
This full class period lesson includes the following:
- Complete lesson directions
- Equation Maker Google Slide Deck Link
- Complete solutions for each slide
- A 1-page Student Exit Ticket
- Exit Ticket Answer Key
Tailored as a 50-minute lesson, this is a great way to extend the learning of your fast finishers, provide a challenge to all of your learners, and give great feedback to you and your students about their current understanding of equation solving.
