Description

This digital escape room will help you take advantage of the excitement of the upcoming solar eclipse, even if you don’t live in its path. It requires no teacher prep and no papers to run off. It’s a great way to have students learn some basics about solar eclipses without turning it into a whole science unit. In 45 minutes, they will do some reading, watch videos, and solve puzzles to finish 5 tasks related to eclipses. Best of all, they’ll have a blast doing it! It presents students with 5 problems to solve and hidden resources to help solve them. Escape rooms allow for learning at its best; the engagement and excitement of solving problems while trying to beat the clock make learning an adventure.

In this escape room, students will learn some basics about solar eclipses, such as how the much smaller moon can cover up the much larger sun, and what ancient cultures thought an eclipse meant. The scenario: After accidentally getting locked in the local planetarium, the students’ mission is to open 5 locks to make it out in time to see the eclipse. As the timer counts down (suggested time is 45 minutes), participants will encounter five challenges where they will interact with on-line resources that are hidden in pictures for students to discover. Each clue is written in rhyme to add to the enjoyment and to give the sense of a true treasure hunt.

This escape room was created in Google Sites. (Note: Please be sure that your school district allows access to Google Sites before purchasing this resource!) In the classroom, students can work in pairs or small groups to solve the puzzles. During remote learning, students can work on it individually at home or in breakout rooms together. Each student/pair/group will need a desktop computer, laptop, Chromebook, ipad, or other device that can access the Internet. The link to the escape room site can be assigned in Google Classroom or Canvas, emailed, or copied and pasted. For your convenience, a QR code is also included. Answers to each “lock” are typed into a Google Form, which tells them immediately if their answer is correct so they can move on to the next challenge.

This PDF includes:

· the link to the Solar Eclipse Escape Room

· instructions for use

· solutions for the challenges

· 4 congratulatory signs that can be printed if you want students who successfully escape to hold them and pose for “victory photos.”
