Description

This lesson and the materials go with Debs, Sedition, Free Speech, and the Homefront During World War One.

The video tells the dramatic story of Eugene Debs’ arrest after his famed Canton, Ohio speech that criticized the war and violated the Espionage and Sedition Acts.  It's episode two of History For Human’s World War I unit.  Students learn how Americans were impacted by the war at home and the government’s efforts to encourage and enforce loyalty while suppressing civil liberties while focusing on the story of Debs and his eventual arrest and imprisonment. The materials include an interactive notesheet for the video, a quick quiz, and an extension lesson that has students read 4 short primary sources related to Emma Goldman’s arrest for distributing pamphlets protesting the draft.  Students answer comprehension questions, gather evidence, and then decide if she was rightly sentenced to jail or if she should have been set free. It's a great inquiry lesson that will get students debating, discussing, and thinking critically! There are answer keys for everything as well.
