Find The Shape Twins: 8th Grade Congruence & Transformation Puzzle Activity

Find The Shape Twins is a fun, engaging way to introduce congruence through rigid motion transformation (translation, rotation, reflection) to your 8th grade math students. Students work individually and in teams to solve 10 different puzzles by creating two congruent shape twins from each given figure. This activity has puzzles of different challenge level, providing all of your students with a memorable experience.

This lesson includes the following materials:

• Complete lesson directions and ideas for optional extension activities.
• One large example puzzle to use during lesson delivery.
• Student work packet including 1 example puzzle, 10 puzzles to solve, and a Reflect & Analyze exit ticket.

This lesson will help your students see how two figures are congruent if one can be mapped onto the other through translation, rotation, and/or reflection. It is a great way to start a unit on congruence, and the included extension activity allows students to create and share their own Shape Twins puzzles.
