Description

This is a Force & Motion Unit project & performance assessment involving physics kinematics, Newton's Laws, energy and the law of conservation. Students are assessed over their understanding of 8 major Force & Motion unit concepts while following a format of NGSS's Science and Engineering Practices! The pages are easy to use graphic organizers with instructions and an example to methodically scaffold students through the project.

Get your students in their cognitive "flow state" in science! A very detailed scoring guide / rubric is formatted as a checklist to guide students through the 2 +/- week project.

The intro page shows an overview of the entire project sequence. There is an example graph and data analysis to guide students through identifying variables, using proper units of measurement, designing and recording data using a data table and designing their own a graph.

*There is an emphasis on procedural steps, experimentation and analysis rather than redesigning, but that could easily be modified for engineering. :)

Student Challenge: Can you follow the Science & Engineering Practices (SEP’s) to design a moving device that proves the 8 Force and Motion scientific concepts listed below?

Use Data to Prove Motion Exists...

  • Include calculations to prove motion in your experiment
  • Include how mass impacts results of your experiment

Prove Each Law of Motion Exists...

  • 1st Law of Motion; Inertia
  • 2nd Law of Motion; F=ma
  • 3rd Law of Motion; Action/Reaction

Prove Energy is Conserved...

  • Potential Energy (PE)
  • Kinetic Energy (KE)
  • Law of Conservation/Momentum

Scope & Sequence:

  1. Asking Questions & Defining Problems - Students decide & research for their project
  2. Developing & Using Models -Design model with labels BEFORE building to show functionality.
  3. Planning & Carrying Out Investigations - Record steps to project & how you will test it.
  4. Analyzing & Interpreting Data TEST! Complete data table & analysis
  5. Using Mathematics & Computational Thinking- Design a graph
  6. Construction Explanations & Engaging in Argument from Evidence- Write a CER to prove your claim!
  7. Obtaining Evaluating, & communicating info- Create a video & reflect on results
