LUCK OF THE PIRATES - Place Your Bets

Luck of the Pirates is an exciting game that will help students identify prime numbers, composite numbers, factors, and multiples. Pirates (players) test their luck by rolling dice to try to increase their fortune by placing bets. The players will determine the likelihood of an outcome using words such as likely, unlikely, etc. The answer key shows the probability of outcomes as a fraction, percent, and in words. For example, the sum is a prime number. There is a 15/36 or a 42% chance the sum will be a prime number when rolling 2 dice.

Pirate bingo is a great team game to play anytime during the school year to reinforce math skills. Students will have fun solving math word problems and telling their classmates to walk the plank. All teams receive the same bingo card. Bingo items are picked from a bag/box/chest by team members. Fill a box or treasure chest with sand to add more excitement to the game. (optional)

WALK THE PLANK 

Pirates (players) have fun reading and comparing decimals and fractions, walking the plank, and hoping not to become SHARK BAIT. Players may play only with decimals, only with fractions, or combine the two skills.

 Skills include:

  • Compare two decimals to hundredths.
  • Compare two fractions with different numerators and different denominators.
  • Express a fraction with a denominator of 10 as an equivalent fraction with a denominator of 100.
  • Express a fraction with a denominator of 2, 4, 5, 10, 20, and 50 with a denominator of 10 or 100.

ISLAND OF THE PIRATE ZOMBIES

This is an excellent game for your students to play to reinforce their basic multiplication and division facts. Players will have a blast trying to survive on an island with pirate zombies. Players need to collect 10 items to survive and win the game. Beware, if players run into 5 pirate zombies before they collect the supplies, their game is over. Great game for a math center.
