Fractions - Adding and Subtracting Mixed Numbers - Digital and Printable

Looking for a complete, no-prep lesson on Adding and Subtracting Mixed Numbers? This scaffolded lesson, begins with adding and subtracting mixed numbers with models. Then it presents some beginning problems, adding the whole numbers and fractions separately using number chips. The problems become more difficult as the lesson progresses.  These colorful, moveable number chips will be used on each slide to solve each addition or subtraction problem. Every slide has every number students need. If the numbers on a slide are not working, students know they have made an error, and must go back and try again. In this way, it is self-checking. This method is not only fun, but decreases student frustration.

 If problems are solved correctly, students will be able to solve a fraction riddle by matching their answer to a letter placed in a yellow heart. The final slide offers a challenge problem in which students must borrow fractions from a whole number in order to complete their subtraction.

 Teacher Key and Video instructions are included.

 Also included are a printable foldable to glue into the notebooks, and a printable worksheet to follow the digital lesson.
