Description
This unit is a great way to get your students motivated to write during the Halloween season without any PREP work! Students will need access to either Docs or Word to type their final copies. Everything else is ready to be uploaded!
Students are given the following prompt: Your friends dared you to spend the night in a notorious haunted house in your neighborhood, and of course, you accepted the challenge.
They are tasked with using imagery to describe their experience in the haunted house. This unit includes the following that can be printed or shared digitally:
- Prompt Overview - Provides students with an outline of expectations for the unit. It also includes "writing challenges" that expand students' skills and encourages them to enhance their writing.
- Graphic Organizer - Provides students with a place to organize their thoughts before they begin writing or typing. This graphic organizer also guides them through the story to keep them on topic.
- TWO Color Coded Editing Checklists (One printable and one digital) - Students are asked to use either colored pencils (printable) or different font colors (digital) to check their stories for grammatical errors.
- TWO Peer Editing Checklists (One printable and one digital) - Gives students the opportunity to read another story and provide constructive solutions to enhance the writing piece
- Grading Rubric - this can be printed or digitally shared - I often give students a copy of this so they can see the exact expectations for the writing piece.
- TWO Imagery Practice Sheets - these can be printed or digtally shared - Students are given an image and asked to brainstorm as many words as possible to describe the picture. Under the image, there is a chart featuring the five senses to encourage them to think about ALL possible words versus just what they see. My kids love doing this, and I find it really gets their creativity flowing!
