Description
Following our 5th Grade “Horror” unit in reading and writing, we had read a number of Goosebumps books from the Horror Land set.
As a result, we wanted to explore with the children what similarities and differences there were between the books, in particular:
- Types of children used
- Their relationships (e.g. were they usually brother and sister?)
- How their relationship changed throughout the novel (e.g. they start off annoying one another, then have to work together to get out of the challenging events, and eventually like each other)
- Similar setting, conflicts and problems
- How the stories follow a very similar pattern – children on their own, get into some kind of conflict and the children have to solve the problem.
We produced this research grid, with cover, for the children to explore their reading of two, three or four books. This is a place for children to record their findings, similarities and difference.
To extend further, we watched the TV adaptations of the stories and compared these with the books too.
This activity could easily be used as a personal research project in class, a Literacy Center idea or a home based activity to complete alongside reading a number of Goosebumps books.
The sheet is fully editable, so links with the TV series comparison can be removed, specific text titles can be added, examples can be typed up and presented as a final activity.
