This product includes 12 sets of comprehension sheets for students to complete based on the Revolting Rhymes by Roald Dahl.
Poems focused upon include:
- Red Riding Hood
- Three Little Pigs
- Snow White
- Jack and the Beanstalk
- Goldilocks and the Three Bears
The product allows teachers to be prepared for 12 full sessions where students work with a specific poem and use a variety of reading skills to answer a series of questions using their growing knowledge of vocabulary, inference, prediction, explanation, retrieval, summary and sequence. There are lots of questions within each sheet and each sheet has its own detailed answer key too. This product does not come with the poems as texts – however, these can be easily accessed online (poetry websites) and through various stores.
When introducing these poems to your students, we suggest using one at a time, and then develop knowledge around one poem to completion. Once done, move onto a second poem using the same sequence of activities to really embrace the poem, develop the knowledge of the poem, the knowledge of language, poetic structures and then be able to answer a variety of questions based on each of the poems. We have included a suggested sequence of activities within the resource. In brief they included:
Listening to the poem – enjoying poetry (each of the poems can be found on YouTube and links to each poem are included in the information sheet included with the product)
Poetry Talk: How did the children react to the poems? What do they think?
Which tale is the poem based on?
What do the children notice about the end of the poem?
Is it the same as the traditional tale? How has it changed?
What did you think of the poem?
Did they like the poem?
What is the rhyme scheme? How do you know?
Vocabulary Acquisition
Having shared the videos (with or without the script of the poem in front of them) watch the videos again with the poem and ask the children to identify any words which they do not understand or do not know the meaning of.
Using highlighter pens, or circling words with a pen, ask the children to identify the vocabulary which they do not understand or know the meaning of. Together, discuss what the words could mean – looking at roots, the context of the sentence, knowledge of other students. If words are left to be researched, use dictionaries.
This activity will ensure that all students understand the vocabulary of the poem.
Comprehension skills
Each of the poems have a range of question sheets. We have devised these sheets to develop a range of skills using a focus on:
