Description

A fun and tactile way to learn the Presidents and their nicknames! This file also comes with flashcards that you and your students can make to study. Learn the President's name, nickname, and order in a fun way!

I have used these assignments in conjunction with one another. First I'll give them the puzzle at the beginning of the lesson and let them try and put it together. Then I'll pass out the flashcards and they can study them and complete the crossword puzzle. To incorporate Common Core and writing I will have the students write choose two nicknames. Then they will write in one paragraph how the president received that nickname or why (these can be pretty funny). Next, I will have the students research why the President received that nickname. I love to give the students about what to learn whenever I can because they generally will take more of an interest in their assignment.

I print out these puzzles on card stock or laminate them so they last longer, and cut it out. Occasionally I'll have the students cut them out to save time and also it allows them to review. I put each of the pieces in their own little bag. Then I pass out each bag to the students. I will use this puzzle periodically throughout my units. The first time I will give the students 5-10 minutes to see how much they can do. Then I'll shorten the time as we learn more about it. By the end of my unit I have puzzle races and time the students. I record their times and push them to try and beat them. It is a fun way for them to review and try and piece the document together and it is great for your tactile learners as well.
