Description
This activity pairs nicely with Simulating Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium……Gummy Bear Style! (Also offered here on Amped Up Learning).
In the first section of this activity, students will be introduced to vocabulary required to understand how to use the Hardy-Weinberg equation. They will also construct Punnett Squares to discover how the Hardy-Weinberg equation was devised in 1908.
Students will then use the equation to determine if allele frequencies for a sample population changes over time.
In Part II of this activity, students will take a PTC taste test. (PTC and control papers will need to be purchased separately from a Biological Supply Company). Students will determine allele frequencies for the Taster and Non-taster alleles for their classroom population and will be comparing those to the allele frequencies of North America.
In Part III of this packet, students will solve a number of challenging AP/Honors-level Hardy-Weinberg practice problems.
**A Key is Included at the end of this packet.
**The concepts provided in this packet meet the AP Biology Essential Knowledge Components for Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium as published by the College Board.
