Harlem Hellfighters & African Americans in WWI | VIDEO & ACTIVITY

This lesson and all resources go with this video on the Harlem Hell Fighters.

The video teaches the amazing story of the Harlem Hellfighters and their triumphs at home and abroad during WWI. It also unpacks the overall black experience during the Great War- at home and in the military, including the Great Migration, segregated units, the race riots, and the spark of the Harlem Renaissance.

The resources include an interactive notesheet that goes right with the video, a quick quiz, and an extension Harlem Hellfighters worksheet lesson. Students read two primary sources from WEB DuBois and FJ Grimke addressing black troops returning from the war and their need to fight for civil rights at home.
