Description
This listing features two heart physiology card sort activities, one for blood flow and the other for the cardiac conduction system. First, students will cut out cards (paper squares) that display essential terms for each pathway. Then they can practice sorting the cards for each process. Students often number the correct sequence on the backside after completing the first successful trial to check the accuracy of future sequencing attempts. This is one of the most impactful learning opportunities I offer. Students who dutifully practice sorting the card sets perform well on the related tasks on the exam, while those who don’t usually bomb the sequencing sections.
I annually implement this activity in my Human Anatomy and Physiology class. Students will sort thirteen terms for the heart blood flow activity from the incoming vena cava through the outgoing ascending aorta—the cards in that activity highlight the heart chambers, valves, and connecting blood vessels. Students will arrange six cards for the cardiac conduction activity, beginning with the sinoatrial (SA) node and ending with the Purkinje fibers.
Students will need scissors and a fastener to bind the cards for storage, such as large gem paper clips (not provided).
I included two answer keys, each on a single page. This PDF file will become editable upon conversion to Microsoft Word using an Adobe Acrobat DC Reader app.
