The Escape Room and Guided Reading activities are all different.

Further details of both products can be seen below:

Guided Reading and Activity Packet:

This product takes the poem "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" by Dr. Seuss, and working through the entire poem in ten sections, sets a range of comprehension questions to explore the poem and develop the reading and comprehension skills of students. The product can be used daily with the poem (not included in the product) and will last for two school weeks if used each day. For more intense work, teachers can decide on the pace of the activity linked to the needs of their students.

This resources includes:

  • 10 Question sets designed to be used daily for three weeks ranging between 6 in-depth questions and 10 questions each day
  • 86 questions overall
  • 5 Additional Activities to engage students further with this poem - including Wordsearch, Crossword, investigating the rhyme scheme of the poem, sequencing the items which the Grinch took from the Whos and sequencing the activities which the Whos would do each year to celebrate Christmas
  • Answer key for each of the questions and the additional activities

The resource uses a range of questions styles to develop the eight key reading skills of:

  • Vocabulary knowledge
  • Prediction using the text cues to support responses
  • Explanation of what is happening within the text and why
  • Inference - where the answer is not specific but can be gained by looking deeper into the authorial intent and bringing own knowledge to the text
  • Sequencing events within the text in the correct order
  • Retrieving facts, ideas and responses directly from the text (using page references to support identification)
  • Summarizing what has been read within a given section or chapter.

Each question has the abbreviation of the question type in brackets to show the coverage and balance between all the reading skills.

We developed this to support reading skills whilst also knowing that our students were becoming increasingly excited by the approach of the festive season. Therefore, we embraced Christmas and used the poem to further enhance the reading development of our pupils. The student booklet was a particularly useful innovation as it saved us time in preparation - with one booklet prepared for each student at the beginning of the unit, and then was used each day for two weeks, with student responses placed in their reading journal.

The answer key ensures that teachers can assess the learning quickly and accurately either on a 1:1 with the student or as a whole class.

We hope that your students enjoy the poem and develop their reading skills further in each of the key comprehension areas. We also hope that it supports you in preparing for Christmas, whilst saving you time in producing effective reading sessions.

The aim of the Escape Room is to provide jeopardy for the children to work under pressure to solve 10 clues to help raise their knowledge of the poem “How the Grinch stole Christmas”. The 10 Challenges within this Escape Room will support their growing knowledge and understanding of the poem through fun, exciting and stimulating activities – perfect for Christmas time!

Students do not need prior knowledge of the poem – but must have access to it to identify vocabulary and sequence key events within it. This Escape Room so is suitable for a one-off adventure for your students.

The activity begins by the teacher reading the Initial Message received. It clearly tells the students that the Grinch is intent on cancelling Christmas and only they can save the day. They are told that there are 10 Challenges to complete, and they must correctly complete each challenge before moving onto the next. Not only that, but with each correct challenge completed, the students are given a letter card to be used in Challenge 10. in order to escape the room.

After the 10th activity – the teacher can read the final script which reviews the learning the children have undertaken as they have completed each of the challenges. This script, together with team labels, letter cards and the opening challenge script are contained within the Resource Pack.

Each activity focuses and builds the children’s knowledge of “How the Grinch stole Christmas”.

The 10 activities are based on the following outcomes:

  • Rhyming words from the poem – the students must identify which words rhyme – using the poem to check the accuracy of the pairs
  • Word Search to focus on the key vocabulary of the poem. The students must also identify the one secret, hidden word before they successfully move onto the next challenge.
  • Comprehension knowledge of the poem to complete the Crossword with 12 questions and answers.
  • Beat the maze and find the Christmas tree before the Grinch steals it.
  • Sequencing the events in the poem. Five sets of five events which must be sequenced correctly using the poem to support the activity.
  • Comprehension (retrieve): Find the places where ten items are kept in the poem.
  • Sequencing the order in which the Grinch stole the eight items from every Who-home
  • Problem solving – identify all the ways in which the presents stolen from the Whos can be rewrapped without repeating the same method.
  • True or False – answer ten questions about the poem which are either True or False
  • Letter sort and Word making: Using the 10 letter cards given throughout the Escape Room – what is the secret word which will stop the Grinch? Following the successful completion of the letter sort, how many different words can the children make from the letter cards given?

When all 10 activities are completed, and the students have gained the correct Code Keys from each activity as well as the letter cards for Challenge 10, the final celebratory script can be read which reviews the learning and informs the students that they have been successful and can leave the Escape Room!

Setting up the Escape Room

1. Students should be split into groups of no more than four and be placed in their own workspace.

2. Access to the poem must be provided

3. Each group should have a Code Key Booklet and decide on a team name

4. Read the Initial Message to the children to set the challenge in context. Discuss what this means, and what the activity entails.

5. Turn to Code Key 1. Agree with the students a set time to complete the problem in – this ensures that the students stay on task and maintains the Escape Room element of working under pressure.

6. At the end of the time, students should have filled in the Code Key in their booklet. The teacher can then check the accuracy of all the groups and talk through the responses the students should have.

7. Move on through the remaining challenges until all 10 have been completed.

8. For those groups who have been successful, they are then able to read the completed statement where they find out if they have escaped the Escape Room!

There are other ways of running Escape Room activities, for example, each activity could be set up on 10 tables and the students then move from table to table completing the activity. This would reduce the need for as many resources, and access to non-fiction sources and Internet Resources could then be targeted at specific Challenges.

The Escape Room should last for at least 2 hours.

We hope that your children enjoy this Escape Room.
