Description

Lesson Objectives:

Know that EM radiation can be categorized as ionizing or non-ionizing based on its effect on atoms when it is absorbed. These differences are why some portions/bands of the EM spectrum are dangerous radiation and some aren’t.

Know that EM radiation with enough energy to ionize (remove an electron from) an atom and change its chemical properties is called ionizing radiation (e.g. microwaves that cook food and UV rays causing plastic to become faded and brittle, DNA damage, wrinkles).

Know that non-ionizing radiation does not have enough energy to ionize atoms but can cause the particles in the matter to move faster (e.g. Infrared lights that warm food and radio waves that transmit sound).

PowerPoint Presentation Includes:
Student Worksheet: Terms to Know; Guided Notes – Slides 2 & 3. Assembly instructions – Slide 4
Engage: Unstable (excited) atoms make themselves more stable (relaxed) by shooting out energy rays. We call this energy radiation.
Explore: Card Sort Activity – Slides 6-10
Lesson (Explain) Slides 11-29: Guided Notes
Evaluate: Exit Ticket – Slide 30
