Description

Reapportionment and Gerrymandering

This project is very timely in light of the two US Supreme Court cases on partisan gerrymandering which were decided in June 2019. A news article on the cases is here

This project allows you and your students to explore and understand how congressional districts are created, why it is important who controls the state legislatures and the nature of partisan and racial gerrymandering.

Students will be making their own maps and in doing so they have the option to create more fair districts (or less fair ones, if you want.)

There is also a lesson on racial gerrymandering which is an ongoing issue in our country with a number of cases making their way through the courts (including the U.S. Supreme Court).

Project includes, Teachers’ Guide, Handouts, and links.

Visit Economical Democracy for more great activities.
