Description
Number Sense Strategies Challenge. Math Strategies for Addition, Subtraction, Division, and Multiplication.
Start building number sense and Number Talks discussions in your classroom!
Examples of number sense strategies for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division are included. They encourage students to use higher-level thinking, and be flexible in their math strategies.
Standard algorithms may not always be the most efficient and appropriate way to solve a problem. In some cases, a strategy as opposed to an algorithm may be the better choice.
Use this challenge with your students to encourage them to use different math strategies and number talks. They have to know how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using the standard algorithm to participate in this challenge.
Each pair of students gets examples of the different math strategies for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Discuss the examples with your students so that everyone can understand them.
The challenge has 2 rounds. In the first round, one person in a pair calculates tasks using math strategies, and another person calculates tasks using standard algorithms. Students calculate the same tasks at the same time. A person who uses math strategies may have pages with examples in front of them.
In the second round, the students switch roles.
There are 4 tasks to calculate in each round - one for addition, one for subtraction, one for multiplication, and one for division.
This resource includes:
