Description

Welcome! This listing features a four-page review packet about microbiology. I created it and annually assign it in my high school biology class.

The review packet is divvied into the following sections.
1. Identify whether the medical conditions are caused by a virus or by a bacterium
2. Short answer
  • Define the term pathogen
  • Identify a specified number of ways bacteria are classified
  • Identify a specified number of ways viruses are classified
  • Identify five reasons why viruses are not considered to be living
  • List four ways bacteria are good for the environment, benefit society commercially, or help us in a mutualistic symbiotic relationship
3. Bacterial morphology
  • Identify the five primary shapes of bacteria
  • Identify the three main colony arrangements of bacteria
  • Write the English meaning of eight Latin root words relating to bacterial shape or colony arrangement
  • Sketch the appearance of the eight Latin root words defined
4. General information profiling viruses.
  • This section entails a series of questions about the viral reproductive lytic cycle, from the scope and sequence to identifying the organelles viruses brainwash during certain stages. I also ask students about the macromolecules that make up viral structure in addition to the importance of the base plate.
5. Bioterrorism
  • Define bioterrorism, identify biological weapons terrorists might use, and explain why would terrorists chose this mode of weaponry verses conventional warfare. Assuming there is a shortage of vaccines, predict what might happen if there ever was a smallpox outbreak in the United States.
6. Bacterial classification
  • Identify the kingdoms and domains of bacteria
  • Identify the three types of archaea and state the environments in which they prefer to live
  • Classify bacteria by modes of breathing
  • Classify bacteria by modes of nutrition
  • Describe the structural and staining difference between a Gram-positive bacterium and a Gram-negative bacterium
7. Antibiotic resistance
  • General questions about the growing problem of antibiotic resistance
8. Draw and label a generic cross-section of a bacterium and a virus, where students include specified, listed structures for each.

I provided a complete key with the answers in bold red font.
