Description
This resource consists of both a PowerPoint and a reading assignment related to the Land Ordinance of 1785 and the Northwest Ordinance of 1787.
The PowerPoint provides students with a brief overview of the Land Ordinance of 1785 and the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, emphasizing the national government's plan for organizing western lands into townships and creating a process by which territories would become states.
The PowerPoint is saved using an Office 97-2003 format, uses a Calibri font, and includes custom animation. Adjustments can be made for single teacher use as needed.
From the reading, students will gain a deeper understanding of the major issues facing the national government after the Revolutionary War: how to pay the nation's debt and how to add additional states to the Union. Students will also gain insight into how the provisions of the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 fostered a "competition" over admitting free and slaves states, and how that competition ultimately contributed to the coming of the Civil War.
The assignment also includes a series of questions based on the reading.
In using this in my own class room, students are encouraged to:
1. Number the paragraphs
2. Read the passage
3. Highlight answers in the reading
4. Use complete sentences
Answer keys for each biography demonstrate these steps.
For those seeking distance learning options, the assignment can easily be converted to a digital activity using Google Slides.
