Description
This resource consists of both a PowerPoint and a biography related to Thomas Paine and his pro-Revolutionary pamphlet Common Sense.
The PowerPoint provides students with an introduction to the arguments presented in Common Sense, with an emphasis on the ideas that the American colonies were too far away to be governed by England, that England was a mere island and should not govern a continent, and that the American colonies did not need England financially.
The PowerPoint is saved using an Office 97-2003 format, uses a Calibri font, and includes custom animation. Adjustments can be made for single teacher use as needed.
The biography focuses on Paine's arrival in the American Colonies and his major arguments in Common Sense. The biography also addresses the impact Paine's arguments had on both separating from England and on documents such as the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.
The biography includes a series of questions based on the reading.
In using this in my own class room, students are encouraged to:
1. Number the paragraphs
2. Read the biography
3. Highlight answers in the reading
4. Use complete sentences
5. Identify the paragraph where the find the answer.
The answer key demonstrates these steps. Academic and content vocabulary words and definitions are included.
For those seeking distance learning options, the biography can be easily converted to a digital activity using Google Slides.
