Description

This mini-unit leads students through the formation of the first political parties in the United States.

Beginning with a discussion of Washington's second term as president, the PowerPoint traces the development of political parties to the differences between Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson. The presentation then leads students through a discussion of the presidential election of 1796 and how the election of Adams as president and Jefferson as vice-president only cemented the differences between Federalists and Democratic-Republicans. Finally, the PowerPoint reviews the Alien and Sedition Acts and the Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions. The PowerPoint is saved in a 97-2003 format and uses a Calibri font. Adjustments can be made as needed.

The mini-unit also includes a discussion of two political cartoons related to these historical events: Cinques-Tetes, or the Paris Monster and Congressional Pugilists. The cartoons come complete with graphic organizers, a series of questions based on the cartoons, and answer keys. and a series of questions based on the cartoon. I have also provided an answer key. Instructors might also wish to have students view an excellent YouTube video about the XYZ Affair - it is presented as an animated opera.

Finally, the mini-unit includes two biographies, one on Alexander Hamilton and another on Thomas Jefferson.

Each biography includes a series of questions based on the reading.

In using this in my own class room, students are encouraged to:

1. Number the paragraphs

2. Read the biography

3. Highlight answers in the reading

4. Use complete sentences

5. Identify the paragraph where they find the answer

Answer keys for each biography demonstrates these steps.  Academic and content vocabulary words and definitions are included.

For those seeking distance learning options, both the biographies and the assignment associated with each cartoon can be readily converted to a digital activity using Google Slides.

Purchased separately, these resources would total $12.50; I am offering them as a bundle for $9.75. I use these resources in my own class room and am certain you will find these a valuable addition to your curriculum.
