Description

Target learning: Student understands the difference between a mixture and solution. Recognize and describe properties of matter. Be able to separate a mixture with different properties.

Students will investigate three different chemicals to find out what they are, put them together, and then try and separate them.

Comes with a lab sheet and sample lab sheet for an answer key. The lab sheet a fold-able so that the students can glue it in their science spiral or journal.

Materials needed

  • Sand
  • Iron Filings
  • Sodium Chloride (salt)
  • Pan or baggie
  • Magnet
  • Water
  • Coffee filters

These three chemicals are composed of different atoms that are arranged in different shapes. Which means they also have different physical properties. The salt is sodium chloride which has a characteristic to dissolve in water. The iron filings are attracted to magnets which make it easy to separate using a magnet. The sand is made out of silicon dioxide or glass which do not allow it to dissolve in water. It’s very obvious that this is a mixture, because if it combined to make a solution you would see a change in shape, color change, change of state, different odor, and produce heat or light.
