Description

Students will read and analyze 8 excerpts from 1609-1745 on the relationship and interactions between Native Americans and early colonists by answering 31 questions (3 sources are from Native Americans and 5 are from colonists).

They will then analyze 3 images, compare and contrast the accounts, and complete an extension task. A teacher information page with ideas for implementation are included, as well as the answers where appropriate so this would be great for a sub!

Sample questions include:
--Explain the motivation, or impetus, for Powhatan’s excerpt.
--Does the first sentence imply that the Virginia Company wants to pursue a positive relationship with the Native Americans, why or why not?
--Explain the meaning of the phrase, “treacherous dissimulation” and its relevance to the excerpt.
--Summarize the main focus of the second paragraph.
--Why and how did that relationship change?
--How might the differences observed impact the path relations between the two will take?
--What does Eliot believe needs to happen before more progress can be made?
--Why is there a new renewed hope for mercy towards Native Americans?
--Does Gachradodow support colonization, why or why not?
